Skincare Products….Do They Work?

With so many “miracle creams” on the market, how to know which ones actually keep the spots away and wrinkles at bay? On their own….none. Unfortunately healthy skin, is like a healthy body, it takes work.

You need lots of water, a good diet, plenty of sleep, limited stress, no smoking, no alcohol, decent amount of exercise, sunscreen, no use of foundation, no sugar, minimal make up….effort much!?? Lest we forget the factor we have no control over, age.   BUT here’s my theory, if fitness regimes have cheat days, then why can’t skincare routines?

So off I go hunting for a cheat day solution to my almost impossible skincare workout. Looking into botox, serums, scrubs, fillers, peels, masks, creams…..that come in vegan, natural, with retinol, organic, enzyme, animal friendly, paraben free and non-paraben free forms.  Ranging from £11.99 to £499.99.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be posting about the skincare products I’ve trialled over the last year, and my thoughts on each one.  First one up….

NAKIN

Winner of The Green Parent Natural Beauty Awards 2019 Best Buy.  Nakin is an eco beauty, natural anti-ageing, cruelty free skincare brand with a vegan range.  Founded by Cris Beetham, a pioneer of natural skincare during the noughties….how could I resist? With an amazing intro, easy to use website and clean & simple packaging.  Nakin seemed like a no brainer.

So what did I try?

Nakin Natural Anti-Ageing Advanced Cleansing Milk – £15.00

  • Free from parabens, SLS, PEGs, synthetic dye & scents
  • Vegan & cruelty free
  • Leaping Bunny approved
  • Wheat Free & Gluten Free

My first thoughts were, aren’t all creams and washes wheat free & gluten free?  No is the answer.  Whilst gluten free skincare products aren’t exactly new, they’ve become increasingly popular, but the majority of people need not be concerned. Only those with severe reactions to gluten, where rare cases found individuals to be sensitive to gluten in makeup have to be careful (Dr. Lamees Hamdan, 2019).  Guess you learn something new every day…… and here I was thinking it was all a marketing ploy.

Why did I choose to trial this product?

I’m always on the hunt for a good face cleanser.  With my skin being constantly exposed to make-up, smog, dirt and sweat.  It’s very easy for build up in pores to happen, leading to break outs and patchy dull skin.

Positives

Easy to use, affordable, great at removing mascara and eyeliner.  Can be used with face cleansing brushes.  Skin feels soft, clean and supple after use, alongside the obvious mention above, vegan, cruelty free, free from parabens….etc (don’t make me repeat).

Negatives

None really.  If I really had to say something, at a push. I would say the smell of the product is not amazing, amazing.  I also had to shake before every use due to the formula settling and you have to use cotton wool pads to apply (so stuffed if you’ve run out) but seriously, I’m really picking here.

Nakin Natural Anti-Ageing Performance Face Serum – £25.00

  • Hyaluronic Acid
  • Antioxidants
  • Helps reverse skin damage caused by sun exposure
  • Natural skin corrector that helps smooth & ease facial lines
  • Protects collagen & elastin fibres

Why did I choose to trial this product?

Approaching the age of 40 yrs and noticing age related changes in my skin.  I find my skin drys easily and post baby, the bounce in my cheeks…..lets just say, not so bouncy anymore.  For this reason, serums have been my new go to when it comes to skincare products as they focus on protecting and rebuilding collagen & elastin fibres.

Positives

No sticky or greasy after feel and skin felt smooth. As serums go, very affordable.  Also the pump dispenser makes it easy to use & easy to travel with.

Negatives

Again, the smell of the product is not amazing, amazing.  It could be just me, or it’s because this is just the smell of natural products.  My skin didn’t feel as hydrated as I hoped, then again my skin is very dry.  So might just be the wrong choice of product for me.  Would definitely suit more normal to oily skin types.
